Makepung is Traditional buffalo races that held in Jembrana, Bali. The
buffalo use for racing are carefully selected for strength and color, given
special food, and never used for polishing the fields. They are decorated with
painted horns and enormous wooden bells, and each pair has a silk banner
attached to the harness.
The competitors are first paraded before the spectators, and then the rice is
on, over a two-kilometer stretch of road. Each team is judged for speed and
style, and the reach amazing speeds for such docile animals, their charioteers
driving standing up, encouraging the bulls in every possible way the run their
fastest. It is a great opportunity for the locals to gamble, and the families of
the winning pairs gain great prestige. The bull racing season is generally
between July and October. .
